Many life-changing events in my life have brought the same theme to my consciousness time and time again: our time here is short and each new day is not guaranteed. Life is precious for this reason... every day that we wake up with breathe in our lungs, we are lucky to be alive.
This painting embodies that knowing, and it has a special place in my heart because of that. I could hang it in my own home and never tire from looking at its abstract, expressive, gestural brushstrokes. Despite being so bold, it looks so delicate, as if it could dissipate at any moment.
The deep bright orange breathes life into the viewer, with small pops of vibrant green throughout the piece. I created this through pure intuition, before I could even think about what I was making... I couldn't recreate the magic of this painting even if I tried (and yes, I've tried!).
Here's the accompanying poem:
"All of the most precious moments
are also completely ordinary
Routine parts of our days
we wouldn’t even miss
until they were echoes of the past
And yet…
However ordinary
these are the most beautiful moments
we cherish most
when life comes to a close
So full of beauty
if you blink
you’ll miss it"
This painting was featured in Laura Mitsu's debut solo exhibition "Poetic Abstraction" in April-May 2024 in San Francisco, CA.
