Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long have you been painting?
A: I've been drawing for as long as I can remember. I got more into painting in high school when I started taking art classes. I fell out of it for a long time, and I really only picked up a paintbrush again in 2021. It feels so good to be back.

Q: What's your inspiration?
A: I don't ever feel really inspired until I start working. Once I start mixing paint, making marks and working, then I get inspired. It will lead me somewhere. A lot of my work has to do with feelings. Abstract art is a way to boil them down to an essence and experience them in a way that has no words.

Q: What materials/tools do you use?
A: I mostly use acrylic paints and mediums. I love to add textures underneath my paint. I also use whatever tools speak to me in the moment... but lately I've been utilizing palette knives, larger brushes, and colored pencils. I also use pre-stretched canvases anywhere from small (10"x10") to large sizes (36"x36").

Q: What's your process like?
A: I usually make some marks on the canvas with whatever color strikes me... usually I make random marks using either a paintbrush or a colored pencil and use my left hand. This takes me out of the "logical mind" and puts me into the "creative mind" by relinquishing control and using my non-dominant hand. It helps the creative juices get flowing. Even if I go into a new painting with an idea of what I'd like to make... I let go of the idea once I get painting and I allow the painting to "tell me" what it needs next. I work very intuitively and I'm not afraid to cover things up if I don't like where it's headed.
